A 140×114 mm plate frame holds the small plate on a moped, scooter or motor scooter, and also the official type 5-1-2 mini motorcycle plate — it is the same size. It comes in plastic or steel. But the material is not the main thing: a plate is usually lost because of how the frame was mounted.
In short
- Size: for a 140×114 mm plate.
- For: moped, scooter, motor scooter, type 5-1-2 mini motorcycle plate.
- Material: plastic or steel.
- Steel frame colours: silver, black, gold.
- Plate: sold separately — the frame can be added to a plate order.
Plastic or steel?
Both are the same size; the difference is material and look. The plastic one is a simple black frame, and the plate slides in without drilling. The steel one is sturdier and comes in three colours — silver, black or gold — so it can be matched to the bike.
Will a motorcycle frame do?
No. Motorcycle frames are made for the large 220×174 mm plate, and the American-style 182×103 mini plate has its own 185×108 mm steel frame. A 140×114 plate will not hold in them — it needs this frame.
How to mount the frame without drilling the plate?
- First screw the frame to the plate mount — 4 screws or bolts, with plastic washers if they come in the kit.
- Then slide the plate into the frame. No need to drill the plate: holes could land on the characters.
- On a motorcycle, use thread locker on the bolts — vibration loosens them.
Why do plates get lost?
Here is the interesting part: a plate almost never falls off by itself — the frame does. It was screwed on in a hurry, without washers or with fewer than four screws. Plates used to have holes along the edges and were bolted on, and such losses did not happen. Modern plates have no holes, so the frame does all the holding.
Maker's tip. Check now and then that the screws are tight and the bar holding the plate is intact: over time it breaks and the plate drops off on the road.
